Should you put your city in your domain name?
Every registrar says yes. We ran 3,554 live checks: nine common trades were registered in every large US city we tested, 243 domains with no exceptions.
3,554 domain availability checks run live against the registries: US trade names and plural job titles paired with US states and with cities in three population bands, each checked in the position a local business would actually register it — the place name first, the trade second.
GoDaddy, Shopify, Namecheap and Network Solutions all give local businesses the same advice, which is to put your city in the domain. It is good advice, and for most trades it is impossible to follow.
On 8 September 2026 we checked nine common trades — roofing, plumbing, electrical, hvac, landscaping, painting, flooring, paving, concrete — against the twelve US cities over a million people and fifteen more between 250,000 and 500,000. That is 243 domains. Every one was registered.
Is your city plus trade .com available? Not in a big city
houstonroofing.com, chicagoroofing.com, dallasroofing.com, newyorkroofing.com and the other eight are all taken, and the same holds along every one of those nine rows.
| Trade | Cities 1M+ | 250–500k | 50–100k | US states |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| roofing | 0/12 | 0/15 | 1/15 | 0/15 |
| plumbing | 0/12 | 0/15 | 0/15 | 0/15 |
| concrete | 0/12 | 0/15 | 1/15 | 0/15 |
| hvac | 0/12 | 0/15 | 4/15 | 0/15 |
| landscaping | 0/12 | 0/15 | 4/15 | 0/15 |
| painting | 0/12 | 0/15 | 7/15 | 0/15 |
| flooring | 0/12 | 0/15 | 8/15 | 0/15 |
| paving | 0/12 | 0/15 | 8/15 | 0/15 |
| electrical | 0/12 | 0/15 | 10/15 | 1/15 |
| remediation | 4/12 | 15/15 | 15/15 | 12/15 |
| hardscaping | 5/12 | 14/15 | 15/15 | 12/15 |
| ductwork | 11/12 | 14/15 | 15/15 | 15/15 |
The bottom three rows are the same construction on the same day. chicagoroofing.com is gone and chicagoductwork.com is free. losangeleshardscaping.com is gone and austinhardscaping.com is free. Nothing about the city changed.
Does a smaller town help?
For four of the nine trades, yes, and by a lot. Drop from cities of a quarter of a million to towns of fifty to a hundred thousand and electrical goes from 0/15 to 10/15, flooring and paving to 8/15, painting to 7/15.
For the other five it changes nothing. plumbing is still 0/15 in that band, and roofing and concrete are 1/15. Shrinking the town by a factor of five does not touch them, because there is a plumber in every town and there has been one for as long as the domain has been worth registering.
Size is the weaker of the two variables; the trade is what decides.
Which trades still have room, and which don't
Here is the whole list, so you can find your own.
| Trade | Free |
|---|---|
| plastering | 15/15 |
| tiling | 14/15 |
| glazing | 13/15 |
| upholstery | 10/15 |
| framing | 9/15 |
| carpentry | 9/15 |
| cabinetry | 7/15 |
| chimney | 5/15 |
| demolition | 4/15 |
| irrigation | 4/15 |
| foundation | 4/15 |
| welding | 3/15 |
| excavation | 3/15 |
| drywall | 3/15 |
| waterproofing | 3/14 |
| fencing | 2/15 |
| masonry | 2/15 |
| handyman | 2/15 |
| siding | 2/15 |
| restoration | 2/15 |
| electrical | 1/15 |
| cleaning | 1/15 |
| remodeling | 1/15 |
| septic | 1/15 |
| asphalt | 1/15 |
| epoxy | 1/15 |
| roofing | 0/15 |
| plumbing | 0/15 |
| hvac | 0/15 |
| landscaping | 0/15 |
| painting | 0/15 |
| flooring | 0/15 |
| paving | 0/15 |
| concrete | 0/15 |
| insulation | 0/15 |
| renovation | 0/15 |
| construction | 0/14 |
| solar | 0/15 |
| security | 0/15 |
| towing | 0/15 |
| gutters | 0/15 |
| windows | 0/15 |
| stucco | 0/15 |
| locksmith | 0/15 |
| moving | 0/15 |
33 of the 45 came back at 3/15 or worse, and 19 came back at zero. That has more to do with the number of roofers in the United States, and how long they have had websites, than with anything about .com.
The top of the table is the useful part. plastering is untouched at 15/15 while drywall, the same wall finished a different way, is 3/15. tiling is 14/15 and flooring is 0/15. The work is much the same either way; flooring is just the word more businesses chose to put on the van.
Try the job title, not the trade
The cheapest thing to test, and almost nobody does it, is swapping the trade noun for the plural job title.
| Trade noun | Free | Job title | Free |
|---|---|---|---|
| insulation | 0/15 | insulators | 10/15 |
| drywall | 3/15 | drywallers | 15/15 |
| welding | 3/15 | welders | 11/15 |
| excavation | 3/15 | excavators | 12/15 |
| handyman | 2/15 | handymen | 11/15 |
| masonry | 2/15 | masons | 9/15 |
| cabinetry | 7/15 | cabinetmakers | 13/14 |
| upholstery | 10/15 | upholsterers | 14/14 |
| roofing | 0/15 | roofers | 0/15 |
| plumbing | 0/15 | plumbers | 0/15 |
| painting | 0/15 | painters | 0/15 |
| moving | 0/15 | movers | 0/15 |
texasdrywallers.com, virginiawelders.com, georgiahandymen.com, illinoisexcavators.com and michiganinsulators.com were all unregistered on 8 September 2026, while the trade-noun version of each was gone.
The bottom four rows are the honest half. For the largest trades the rename buys nothing: every form of roofing and plumbing and moving is taken. It works in the middle of the table, where enough businesses exist for the plural to read as a name and not enough for anyone to have bothered registering both forms.
The word isn't gone, the pairing is
roofing scores 0/15 after a state name. Crossed with ordinary brand words instead, in the shape of roofinginstinct.com or roofinganvil.com, the same list of trades is 93% available.
The trade word has plenty of room. What has no room is the exact construction every registrar recommends, because it is the one every business in that trade tried first. Place name plus trade is not a naming idea. It is a queue, and you are not near the front of it.
What to do when your city plus trade .com is taken
In the order that costs least:
- Try the job title.
insulatorsoverinsulation, drywallersoverdrywall. Free ten to fifteen times out of fifteen where the noun was free none. One extra check. - Name the service, not the category.
ductworkis 15/15 against states wherehvacis 0/15, and a duct company that saysductworkis being more accurate anyway. - Go smaller than the metro. The 50,000-to-100,000 band freed up four of the nine trades that were locked in every larger city. Counties and neighborhoods are the obvious next step down and we did not test them, so treat that as untested rather than as advice.
- Drop the place and use a real name. 93% of trade-plus-brand-word combinations were free on the same day.
roofinganvil.comis a worse SEO story and a better business name, and you can have it. - Check them together rather than one at a time. Every number above came out of crossing two lists and checking the whole grid. Four thousand combinations take about as long to check as one, and none of these results would have been predictable without doing it.
If you want the grid rather than the argument, the pattern below is the one this piece measured. US states crossed with trade names on .com, checked live. The same question for two-word brandable names is a different answer, and a more encouraging one.
Common questions
- Should you put your city in your domain name?
- If you can get it, yes. It is what every registrar advises and it reads clearly to a customer. The problem is inventory. Checking on 8 September 2026, nine common trades (
roofing, plumbing, electrical, hvac, landscaping, painting, flooring, paving, concrete) were registered against every one of twelve US cities over a million people and every one of fifteen cities between 250,000 and 500,000. That is 243 domains and 243 registrations. - Is my city plus my trade .com likely to be available?
- It depends far more on the trade than the city. In towns of 50,000 to 100,000 people,
electricalwas free after 10 of 15 andflooringafter 8 of 15, butplumbingwas still 0 of 15 androofing1 of 15. A specialist trade is open almost everywhere.chicagoductwork.com,dallasductwork.comandaustinhardscaping.comwere all unregistered on 8 September 2026. - What should I do if my city plus trade domain is taken?
- Try the plural job title instead of the trade noun. Against fifteen US states,
insulationwas available 0 times andinsulators10 times;drywall3 anddrywallers15;welding3 andwelders11. It does not rescue the biggest trades, becauseroofersandplumbersare as gone asroofingandplumbing. For everything in the middle it is the cheapest thing to test. - Does putting my city in my domain help my local SEO?
- This piece measured availability, not rankings, and does not claim what it did not check. What it can tell you is that the advice is given far more often than it can be followed, so a plan that depends on getting the exact city-and-trade domain will usually fail at the registration step.
- Which trades still have .com domains available?
- The unglamorous and the specialised. Against fifteen US states on 8 September 2026,
plasteringwas 15/15,tiling14/15,glazing13/15,ductwork15/15,retaining15/15 andjoinery15/15. Against the same fifteen states, roofing, plumbing, hvac, landscaping, painting, flooring, paving, concrete, windows, solarandtowingwere all at 0/15.
